Language specific features

On-screen keyboard

The on-screen keyboard is shown only on mobile devices. For languages that do not use the English alphabet, we provide a custom on-screen keyboard, with characters specific to the language's script.

Translated Interface

All the menus, buttons and help instructions in the puzzle player interface are translated to the target language.

Right to Left layout

If a language used a script written from right to left (for ex. Arabic or Hebrew), the clue, menus, instructions and other elements are rendered in the right to left direction, in both the print and the puzzle player interface.

Language specific fonts

Our support for Google Fonts allows you to choose fonts specifically created for your language (for example, Rajdhani font for Hindi and Nepali). You can also choose fonts with different writing styles for the same language (for example, Naskh vs Nastaliq writing style fonts for Arabic and Urdu).

Phonetic typing

For Hindi and Urdu, solvers have the option to use a phonetic keyboard as well. They can type in their responses using the English alphabet, and our system will automatically interpret and convert their entries into the puzzle's language.

Voice typing (Beta)

On supported devices, solvers can choose to speak out their answers, and our voice typing assistant will convert those to text entries for the puzzle. This feature is currently available for Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Urdu.

Contributing dictionaries for new languages

If you'd like to help us add support for a language that's not currently available, we welcome contributions of word lists and dictionaries. Here are our guidelines for sourcing and preparing dictionary data:

Primary sources:

  • Trusted dictionaries from reputable publishers in the selected language (e.g., Merriam Webster for American English)
  • Open source dictionaries from Open Office extensions
  • Hunspell dictionaries

Word list preparation guidelines

After sourcing your word list, please follow these filtering guidelines:

Words to include:

  • Valid, commonly used words
  • Modern, contemporary vocabulary (for a better user experience)

Words to filter out:

  • Proper nouns (remove capitalized words)
  • Abbreviations and contractions
  • Parts of speech indicators
  • Vulgar or inappropriate words
  • Archaic or uncommon words (especially for games like Word Flower)

Optional processing:

  • Strip accents if you want to support unaccented typing
  • Normalize word forms for consistency

Game-specific considerations

The same dictionary can be used across multiple puzzle types:

  • WordRoW: Focus on common, everyday vocabulary
  • Word Flower: Prioritize modern words over archaic terms
  • Crosswords: Include a broader range of vocabulary, including some technical terms
