What is a Rows Garden?
Rows Garden puzzles are the brainchild of master puzzle constructor Patrick Berry. Each 'garden' contains 12 rows, A through L, and 38 hexagon-shaped blooms. There are 14 'light' blooms (white centers), 14 'medium blooms' (gray centers), and 10 'dark' blooms (black centers).
This puzzle format combines crossword-style clues with a unique hexagonal layout, requiring solvers to fill both rows and blooms to complete the garden.
Below is a live example of a Rows Garden puzzle that you can solve.
Rows Garden puzzles are only supported through uploaded files. There is no online editor within the PuzzleMe dashboard for creating Rows Garden puzzles from scratch. See the upload formats page for detailed instructions and sample files.
Garden Layout
Each Rows Garden puzzle features:
- 12 rows labeled A through L, each containing specific word placements
- 38 hexagon blooms scattered throughout the garden, each containing a single six-letter answer
- Three bloom types
- 14 light blooms with white centers
- 14 medium blooms with gray centers
- 10 dark blooms with black centers
Filling in the rows
- All row answers read horizontally, from left to right
- Rows A and L each contain a single answer
- Rows B through K each contain two consecutive answers
Filling in the blooms
- Each of the 38 blooms contains a single six-letter answer
- The answer may be entered clockwise or counterclockwise; you decide which direction based on what's filling the rows
- There are three sets of bloom clues: light, medium, and dark. Answers to light clues go in the hexagons with white centers; medium answers go in the hexagons with gray centers; and dark answers go in the hexagons with black centers.
- All three bloom lists present clues in random order, so you need to use the row answers to figure out where to 'plant' each bloom.
