Hosting contests on your WordPress website

Objective

Learn how to use our WordPress plugin to smoothly organize puzzle contests

BECOME A PARTNER

The WordPress Contest plugin is available only on our paid plans.

PuzzleMe provides a private WordPress plugin which can be used to enable puzzle contests. This plugin is distinct from the publicly available WordPress plugin that only allows embedding non-contest mode puzzles. Access to this private plugin is provided only to approved contest organizers. Please contact us if you would like to get access to the plugin.

WordPress contest plugin features

  • Login via WordPress : The plugin ensures that an embedded puzzle is available only to users logged in to the WordPress website. Users who are not logged in will be prompted to sign in.
  • User information: A downloadable Users CSV file, containing users' names, email addresses and UIDs is available to the WordPress administrator. This file allows the administrator to assign puzzle scores to individuals, by merging information from this Users CSV file with the Plays CSV file (obtained from the PuzzleMe account dashboard).
  • Multiple devices: Solvers are able to access and solve their partially completed puzzles from different devices, provided they use the same login to the WordPress website.
  • Single attempt: Each solver is restricted to only one attempt at submitting a puzzle
  • Privacy: No personally identifiable information is passed to Amuse Labs servers.

Usage

Please reach out to us for installation and usage instructions.

Tips

  1. If you are hosting your site on WordPress.COM, please disable single sign on option in the JetPack plugin (Click here for details). The JetPack single sign on might interfere with your ability to create user logins for your specific site.
  2. For contest solvers, please keep the WordPress user permissions to as restricted as possible. The Subscriber user role should be used for solvers.
  3. Sometimes page builder WordPress plugins might interfere with the way puzzles are displayed. Please ensure that you thoroughly test the puzzles before going live to ensure other plugins are not affecting the puzzles page.
  4. Once the contest is finished, we would recommend changing the passwords for each solver, or deleting their accounts altogether, to prevent any unauthorized access in the future.
  5. If you do not want solver to change their own passwords, please disable the option using a plugin such as LoginPress

Resources

There are a few publicly available WordPress plugins which could simplify the process of running the contest site. These plugins are not essential to conducting the contest, but could be useful.

Import Users from CSV

With this plugin, you can upload a CSV file of usernames/passwords to your site, and automatically create logins for your contest participants.

Change WP Admin login

The default login URL of WordPress websites looks like

example.com/wp-login.php

Using this plugin, you can change the login URL to a better, human readable URL. For example

example.com/login

LoginPress

This plugin can be used to customize the elements on the site login form. You can change the logos, background and color scheme, and disable specific options on the login screen (such as the ability to reset a forgotten password).

Hide admin bar from non admins

This plugin can hide the default menu bar from non-admin users.

Temporarily Hidden Content

This plugin can be used to display a teaser message/welcome message before the puzzle goes live.
