Creating a Codeword

Objective

Learn how to create a Codeword puzzle from scratch using the PuzzleMe™ dashboard.

Getting Started:

  1. From your dashboard, click Create, then click New game, and select Codeword.
  2. Make sure the Content tab is selected, and click Create (as opposed to Upload, which is for uploading a puzzle file).
  3. Enter a Game title.
  4. Select the Game language.
  5. Enter a Slug (Optional) - a unique identifier for your puzzle's URL and embed code.
  6. Under Width and Height, set the dimensions of your empty grid.
  7. Click Create game. This takes you to the grid editor.

Building the grid

In the grid editor toolbar, select Enter letters, then click a cell and type a letter to fill it in. Repeat to spell out your puzzle's words across and down, just like a crossword grid.

You enter letters, and PuzzleMe automatically assigns each unique letter a number (1-26) based on where it first appears in the grid - this is the mapping players have to decode. Read more about gameplay here.

Circling cells

Select the circled cell tool, then click any cell to mark it as circled - a common way to highlight cells that spell out a hidden word or theme.

Pre-revealing cells

Pre-revealed cells give players a starting foothold for deducing the rest of the number-to-letter mapping. The fewer cells you pre-reveal, the harder the puzzle.

  1. Select the pre-reveal tool in the toolbar.
  2. Click on any cell that already has a letter in it to mark it as pre-revealed.

Once you're done, click Save.
