What’s your all time favourite crossword clue?
My favorite among my own crossword clues is, “Prepare for feathering.” It’s original: no one ever used it before; no one will ever use it again. It’s hard to guess but obvious once you guess it. It’s surprising–“feathering” sounds like such a happy occupation, until you think about it. And it points to a fundamental quality of human nature, from which even crossword constructors and their critics are not immune. (The answer: TAR.)
