Dear Reader,

You’re reading the monthly newsletter from Amuse Labs, covering the world of puzzles, publishing, and updates to PuzzleMe™, the most advanced digital platform for smart games.

The Times Of India Debuts ‘Flipped It’ Word Game

The Times of India, the world’s largest-selling English-language daily newspaper, has launched an addictive new daily word game called Flipped It, bringing a fresh spark to readers’ morning routines. The game has a two-word prompt, and players have to “flip” each word into an antonym or a synonym to form a well-known phrase. For example, the answer to “Slow Meal” is “Fast Food.”

The game is distributed exclusively through TOI’s print edition via a QR code sitting right inside the letter ‘O’ of the masthead. Scanning it gets the reader playing the game online in seconds. Readers have to enter their phone number to play, helping TOI understand their print audience better. It’s also a way to meet readers where they already are, without asking them to change a habit they’ve had for years.

12 News Corp Australia Publications Launch Games

News Corp Australia, the country’s largest commercial news publisher, has launched a new games experience across 12 publications, bringing together the popular Shark Quiz alongside daily crosswords, sudoku, word games and more.

Powering games across a network of publications requires more than simply embedding puzzles. News Corp Australia uses PuzzleMe from Amuse Labs to centrally manage and publish the same daily content across all 12 mastheads, delivering a consistent experience for readers while keeping editorial workflows simple behind the scenes.

Danish Publisher Uses Games to Bring Science to Readers

While scientific topics can sometimes feel intimidating, publications have found that science games offer a simple way to engage their readers. For example, Videnskab.dk, a Danish science publication, turns scientific concepts into Jigsaws and WordroW puzzles to create playful entry points that encourage readers to explore topics they might otherwise overlook.

“I’ve found that the image doesn’t have to be ‘Photography of the Year.’ If the article context is interesting, people will solve the puzzle regardless of whether it’s a high-art photo or just a pile of candles on a table.

      Jon Mathorne, Journalist at Videnskab.dk

A Jigsaw on their site, for example, ends with a message directing readers to a related science article, turning a few minutes of play into an opportunity for deeper engagement. Combined with game formats that journalists can quickly create and schedule themselves, the approach has made games a natural extension of the publication’s editorial strategy. From the Crossworld

Creating your own crossword? So are many others. Novice constructors are now posting their first grids on r/crossword, where experienced solvers and constructors dissect everything from clueing and fill to theme execution with frank, detailed, and actionable feedback. If you’re looking to improve your own puzzles, this recent thread and this one are a great place to start.

What if games could teach AI how to think? That’s the idea behind Arkadium’s GameLab, which uses game-based environments to train and evaluate AI models on skills like reasoning, planning, memory, and decision-making. The company believes games offer a richer way to develop and measure intelligence than traditional benchmarks, opening up a new role for play in AI research.

      Puzzle of the Month

An image in the grid isn’t just for show in Joyzzle’s 1776. It becomes part of the crossword itself, creating a clever solving mechanic that makes excellent use of PuzzleMe’s Image in Grid feature. Combined with a campaign that donates $1 for every correct solve (up to $1,776) to help fight hunger in America, it’s an easy choice for our Puzzle of the Month.
